The latest thing I am trying with the kids is a "vintage" lego mindstorms 1.0. I set up a nice little spot where we can use an old Dell Latitude 166mhz pentium running windows 98. The 1.0 version of the mindstorms ran on win 95, and doesn't seem to run correctly on my windows 2k system. It runs great on the Dell. Nathan and Sarah are really getting into it, Nathan has been running the mouse and Sarah has been running the robot. Both are freely offering the other suggestions, welcome or not on what to do. So far they have progressed nicely in the excellent guided tutorials by lego. So far they have gotten to program the RCX (mindstorm controller) to run motors and run bump sensors, and the light sensor. Sarah really wants to make a robot dog, and Nathan wants to make a robot tank.
